Time to Degrease: How to Clean a Gas Stove Top

After cooking family meals, the gas stove top can become the grimiest part of the kitchen. When grease and food splatters as you cook, the intense heat can make the stains even worse. Follow our easy guide on how to clean a gas stove top and your range can look brand new again!

Frequency

How often should I clean my gas stove top? Light cleaning every day makes a huge difference to maintain a clean range. Simply use an all-purpose cleaner to remove any food or splatters with a towel. An occasional deep cleaning every few weeks will remove tough stains or build up. Just follow my step by step guide to deep clean your range.

Step by Step Guide

To clean your gas stove top safely, make sure everything is turned off and cool to the touch before starting to clean.

Step 1: Remove the Grates and Caps

  • Start by removing the grates and caps that rest on your range so you can place them in the sink. Then fill the sink with warm soapy water so they can soak for 15 minutes. This will soften any of the build up on your grates or caps.
  • Drain the sink and move on to the next step.
  • Alternatively, you can place the grates and caps through a cycle in the dishwasher.

Step 2: Cleaning Paste

  • You can easily make a potent cleaning paste with 1 part vinegar, two parts baking soda, and a squirt of dish soap.
  • Use a soft sponge to apply the paste and scrub the grease from your grates and caps. To avoid scratching, stay away from abrasive sponges, steel wool, or metal items that can scratch the coating.

Step 3: Clean Stovetop Surface

  • Use a damp cloth to clean loose food and spills. For stubborn build up, apply the paste used in the previous step. YOu can also use a degreaser spray for grease stains.
  • After the stovetop has been cleaned to your satisfaction, use a dry cloth to dry it.

How to Clean Burnt Food and Stains

Burnt food and stains on your gas stove top can be quite an eye sore. Luckily, you probably have everything you need to clean them already in your home. Sprinkle some baking soda directly onto the stovetop and add a little water to make a paste that covers the stain. Get a rag wet with warm water and place it on top of the spot then let it sit for 30 minutes. Wipe clean with a sponge.
